Dayton is a city located in the county of Montgomery in the U.S. state of Ohio. Its population at the 2010 census was 141,527 and a population density of 967 people per km². After 10 years in 2020 city had an estimated population of 139,907 inhabitants.
The city was created 228 years ago in 1795.
Dayton was founded in 1796 and originally named Dunbarton. It was renamed Dayton in 1805 after Jonathan Dayton, an officer in the Revolutionary War.
Its location at the confluence of the Great Miami, Stillwater, and Mad Rivers made Dayton ideal for industry. By the late 1800s, Dayton was a manufacturing powerhouse producing iron, steel, railroad cars, cash registers, and more. The Wright brothers built their first successful airplane in Dayton.
