History
The area was originally inhabited by the Tocobaga tribe before Spanish settlers arrived in the 1600s. Clearwater was incorporated as a city in 1915.
Early growth centered on citrus cultivation, sponge diving, and tourism. The opening of nearby MacDill Air Force Base during World War II also fueled the economy.
Today tourism remains vital, bolstered by the warm climate, beaches and water recreation like boating and fishing.
