After 10 years in 2020 county had an estimated population of 33,415 inhabitants. Its county seat is Manning. The county was created 169 years ago in 1854.

The county has four distinct seasons: fall (October through December), winter (January through March), spring (April through June), and summer (July through September).
The area was first settled by Europeans in 1670 as part of Charles Towne; it became part of South Carolina when it gained statehood in 1788. The county was named after Governor Henry Middleton's home county in England; he was also a signer of both the Declaration of Independence and Constitution."
