Brooklyn is a city located in the county of Kings in the U.S. state of New York. After 10 years in 2020 city had an estimated population of 2,577,000 inhabitants.

The city was created 131 years ago in 1892.

Brooklyn is one of the 5 boroughs that makes up New York City. With over 2.5 million residents, if Brooklyn were its own city it would be the 4th largest in the U.S. Brooklyn spans about 70 square miles along the western end of Long Island.

History

Brooklyn was originally founded as six small Dutch towns in the 1600s before consolidating to become one city in 1898. It joined New York City in the same year.

In the 19th century, Brooklyn grew quickly as an industrial hub and became home to the Brooklyn Navy Yard. After WWII, its demographics began shifting as European immigrants were replaced by Puerto Ricans, Dominicans and others.

Today, Brooklyn is known for distinct neighborhoods like Williamsburg, Park Slope, Brooklyn Heights, Bay Ridge, and Coney Island. Each area has its own unique culture and flair.
