It is located in East-Central Illinois, along the Illinois River opposite its twin city of O'Fallon, Missouri, which lies to its west across the river. The two cities form "Metro-East," a part of the St. Louis Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The city was founded in 1818 by Antoine Peltier (also known as Anthony Pelter). Originally from Sainte-Scholastique d'Achigan (now Sainte-Scholastique), Quebec, Canada, he had arrived in New Orleans in 1799, then established a fur trading post and later a farm on Bayou Laclede near St. Louis, Missouri. He eventually settled at what became known as Belleville (which means "beautiful hill" in French).
Peltier's trading post was located at what is now downtown Belleville, Illinois. In 1819 Peltier sold all his holdings to a group
