Winder is the largest city and county seat of Barrow County. Located along Highway 82, Winder originated as a railroad town in the late 1800s. It is named after John H. Winder, a civil war general who oversaw the construction of railroad lines in the area. Winder has grown into a suburban community of over 15,000 residents with a charming downtown surrounding the historic Barrow County Courthouse.
The small city of Auburn lies between Winder and Athens. It was founded by settlers moving west from Auburn, New York in 1892. Historic sites in Auburn include the old Atlanta Highway post office, the Auburn depot, and various buildings showcasing Victorian architecture. Annual events include the Auburn Brick Show celebrating the city's brick-making history.
Statham is located along the railroad lines northeast of Winder. It was incorporated in 1907 and named for the president of the Georgia Railroad at the time.
