Atascosa County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 44,911 and a population density of 14 people per km². After 10 years in 2020 county had an estimated population of 51,724 inhabitants. Its county seat is Jourdanton. The county was created 168 years ago in 1856.
Atascosa County is located in southern Texas, about 30 miles south of San Antonio. The county was formed in 1856 from parts of Bexar County and was named for the Atascosa River, which runs through the area.
The first European settlers arrived in the 1820s when empresario Martin De Leon brought colonists from Mexico to settle the area. Early settlers were mostly ranchers raising cattle, sheep, and goats. J. Frank Dobie, the famous folklorist and writer, was born in Atascosa County in 1888.
