Arden Village in Delaware is a village and art colony founded in 1900, as a radical Georgist single-tax community by sculptor Frank Stephens and architect Will Price. The village occupies approximately 160 acres, with half kept as open land.
The community was created as a place to escape the pollution of industrialization and to be able to freely express oneself without interference from others. The founders had been inspired by the writings of Henry George, who argued that all land should be publicly owned and tax should be levied on its value rather than on labor or production.
The village retains its radical character today, with no roads within it for cars—you have to walk everywhere! The streets are named after famous artists such as Van Gogh Street and Pollock Street (the famous Jackson Pollock). There are many galleries showing art from local artists as well as international ones like Andy Warhol who lived there briefly before his death in 1987.
