The city was created 110 years ago in 1913.
Anchorage was founded in 1914 when a tent city was established as a construction camp for the Alaska Railroad project. It officially became a city in 1920 and quickly grew as more people came to help build the railroad.
In the 1930s and 1940s, Anchorage became an important air transportation hub and Army base during World War II. This helped Anchorage grow rapidly into Alaska's largest city.

Anchorage is located in southcentral Alaska on the shores of Cook Inlet, which leads to the Gulf of Alaska. It sits at the base of the Chugach Mountains.
