Akron is a city located in the county of Summit in the U.S. state of Ohio. Its population at the 2010 census was 199,110 and a population density of 1,233 people per km². After 10 years in 2020 city had an estimated population of 195,994 inhabitants.

The city was created 199 years ago in 1824.

Known as the “Rubber Capital of the World”, Akron has diversified over the years into a hub for advanced manufacturing, healthcare, and education. But it still retains unique attractions related to its industrial roots.

Tire Manufacturing History

Akron's historic ties to the tire industry are showcased at the popular National Inventors Hall of Fame where visitors can learn about Harvey Firestone, BF Goodrich, and other innovators.

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company headquarters, built in 1924, offers free public factory tours to see dirigibles and equipment from Akron’s past heyday of tire production.

Outdoor Recreation

Akron provides access to many outdoor activities with its scenic location along the Cuyahoga River and Ohio & Erie Canal. The downtown Towpath Trail follows the canal route for biking, jogging, or strolling.

Summit Metro Parks contain over 14,000 acres with scenic trails, lakes, gardens, and picnic areas. The man-made Lake Anna offers boating, fishing and a beach for summer recreation.

Arts and Culture

The Akron Art Museum impresses with its collections of contemporary art, glass art, and photography. For performing arts, the Akron Civic Theatre hosts concerts, comedy shows and Broadway productions in a majestic historic theater.
