Oglala Lakota County is a county in southwestern South Dakota, United States. It is home to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and Wounded Knee. The population was 13,672 at the 2020 census.
Oglala Lakota County does not have a functioning county seat; Hot Springs in neighboring Fall River County serves as its administrative center.
It has an area of 5,431 km² (2,097 sq mi). The county is named after the Oglala Sioux tribe that occupied it before European settlement.
The county was established in 1875 from parts of Brown County and Jackson County. It was originally named "Hayes County" for Brigadier General George Crook's commander Colonel Joseph J. Hayes, who had been killed in action during the Civil War. The name "Hayes" was rejected by the United States Postal Service because there was already a Hayes post office in Texas; so it was renamed "Oglala" on October 1, 1876 after the Oglala Sioux tribe.
