History of Navarro County

Navarro County was established in 1846, just after Texas became a state. It is named after José Antonio Navarro, a Tejano leader and signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence.

Corsicana was founded in the 1850s and by the late 1800s became an important industrial and agricultural center, known for producing fruit, cotton, and oil. The first Texas oil well drilled west of the Mississippi was located just outside Corsicana.
