Albania (in Albanian Shqiperi / Shqipëria), formally the Republic of Albania (Republika e Shqipërisë) is a republic in southeastern Europe. It borders Montenegro to the north, Kosovo to the northeast, the Republic of Macedonia to the east and Greece to the south. It is bordered by the Adriatic Sea to the west and the Ionian Sea to the southwest. Its capital and largest city is Tirana . The native name of the country, Shqipëria, means "Land of Eagles". It was adopted after the rebellion against the Turks led by Gjergj Kastriot (" Skanderbeg ") in 1433. At that time, the free population of the territory gentile shqipëtar adopted as the flag used by Skanderbeg had as main emblem the eagle imperial double-headed inherited from the Byzantines. The name Albania, however, is alien to the native and comes from the Latin albus, white, referring to the snow on the mountains.
