Gardena is a city located in the South Bay region of Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 58,829 at the 2010 census, up from 57,746 at the 2000 census. Until 2014, the US census cited the City of Gardena as the place with the highest percentage of Japanese Americans in California. Gardena is one of only two Los Angeles County cities (the other being Lynwood) that has a majority Asian population.

In English, Gardena means "garden" or "flower garden". The city's name came from Edgar Rice Burroughs' story "The Gods of Mars". In the story, he described "Gardena" as one of two green Martian cities on Barsoom (the other being Turquar).

The area was originally part of Rancho San Pedro, granted by Governor Juan Bautista Alvarado to Juan Jose Dominguez in 1838. The settlement was known as "Las Tres Viudas" or "The Three Widows".

Gardena was founded in 1915 by George Gill Greenhaw and Frank Stearns, who purchased 4,000 acres (16 km²) divided into 65 lots of land and formed an agricultural company called "Gillgreen" with their friend Samuel Kraemer. Greenhaw's wife Ella Mae (1901–2007) gave birth to their first child on March 7, 1916. Their second son was born on December 31, 1916.

In 1923 they sold their assets and relocated to Oregon where they began a business called "Greenhaw Farms". In 1924 they sold that business and purchased another farm in Oregon they called "Bielenberg Farms",.

It was the location of the first Japanese American internment camp during World War II. The camp was located at 20th Street and Normandie Avenue (now Avalon Blvd.) in an area that is now known as Gardena. It housed Japanese Americans rounded up from Southern California and other areas around the West Coast of the United States following Executive Order 9066 issued by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on February 19, 1942.
