The area had been settled by American pioneers as early as 1775; however, after Fayette County was created from parts of Woodford and Lincoln counties on December 6, 1780 by an act of the Kentucky State Legislature, Lexington was not established until 1782. It became the state's first inland town. Lexington was named for Lexington in Suffolk, England. The original town plat (1800) included land that today forms the core of Downtown Lexington as well as many surrounding neighborhoods.
