The city was created 77 years ago in 1946.

Coachella is a city in Riverside County, California; it is the easternmost city and namesake of the Coachella Valley, in Southern California's Colorado Desert. It is one of the largest cities in the state of California by area. The population was 45,658 at the 2010 census, up from 38,828 at the 2000 census. 

As of 2010, Coachella had a median household income at $47,845. The city's per capita income was $21,839. About 23% of families and 25% of the population were below the poverty line.

The city was incorporated in 1978 as Desert Hot Springs but later merged with Palm Springs in 1991. It is located within the Greater Palm Springs area (which also includes Cathedral City).
