City of Winchester is a county located in the U.S. state of Virginia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 26,203 and a population density of 1,093 people per km². After 8 years in 2018 county had an estimated population of 124,295 inhabitants. The county was created 272 years ago in 1751.

Winchester is located in the northern Shenandoah Valley of Virginia along Interstate 81. It was founded in 1744 and originally named Frederick Town. The city served as a key transport hub during the Civil War due to its strategic location along the railroad.

Winchester changed hands over 70 times during the war. Significant battles like First and Second Battles of Winchester occurred nearby in 1862 and 1863.

Today, many downtown buildings still have bullet marks from this turbulent time period.
