Brockton is a city in Plymouth County, Massachusetts. It was incorporated in 1881 and got its name from a town in England. Brockton was best known for its successful shoe manufacturing industry, earning it the nickname "Shoe City."

As of 2019, Brockton had a population of around 95,000 residents. It is diverse with large African American, Cape Verdean, Haitian and Latino communities. Nearly 40% of residents are foreign born. The median income is $64,000.

Geography

Brockton covers nearly 21 square miles in southeastern Massachusetts. It is only 25 miles south of Boston. The city has varying terrain with the Trout Brook Conservation Area's rivers and ponds. The climate is humid continental.

Economy

Although no longer focused on shoes, Brockton has manufacturing, healthcare, retail, food service and transportation companies. Larger employers are the VA Medical Center, Signature Healthcare and Shaw's Distribution Center.

Culture

Brockton has a large immigrant population that has shaped its culture. Festivals celebrate cultures like Portugal Day at the Cape Verdean Festival. The Brockton Fairgrounds hosts an annual country music festival. The city is also proud of its champion high school sports teams.

Redevelopment

Brockton is undergoing urban renewal projects to revitalize the city. The Brockton Brightfield project is redeveloping former industrial land along the Trout Brook into new housing, commercial sites and green space accessible to all residents.
